The harm done to the Phillips Collection during the tenure of Jonathan Binstock is irreparable, but action can be taken to halt more wanton “transformation.” During his tenure, the museum has sold key holdings acquired by its visionary founder, including Georgia O’Keeffe’s “Large Dark Red Leaves on White,” while acquiring work by Sam Gilliam, the artist Binstock wrote his dissertation on. We call upon corporate, foundation, and individual donors to the Phillips Collection to cut all ties with the Phillips Collection and cease further support until:

1. Jonathan Binstock resigns as Director and CEO of the museum. If he does not resign, we call for his removal by the Board.

2. The Phillips Collection rewrites its Strategic Plan and Mission Statement to reaffirm that its first purpose is to preserve and share with the public the collection of Duncan Phillips, and his idiosyncratic vision of modernist and proto-modernist artwork arranged in conversation across space and time.

3. The museum works with Sotheby’s to arrange a repurchase of Georgia O’Keeffe’s “Large Dark Red Leaves on White,” and failing to do so, the “blood money” acquisition funds are held in trust and limited exclusively for the purchase of comparable work by Georgia O’Keeffe, when such opportunity arises.

4. The pet-project acquisitions under Jonathan Binstock, such as gifts of the work of Sam Gilliam, that occurred while the museum was simultaneously disassembling the museum’s original collection, are undone.

5. The Curator of Global Contemporary Art, and other positions intended to destroy the museum’s defining character as an idiosyncratic expression of modernism, are abolished.

6. The museum should cease all new acquisitions for a period of five years while the museum works to reaffirm its dedication to its existing collection.

UNTIL THESE GOALS ARE ACCOMPLISHED, WE CALL ON THE PUBLIC TO HOLD TO ACCOUNT THOSE CORPORATE AND NON-PROFIT ACTORS WHO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE METHODICAL AND IRREVERSIBLE DESTRUCTION OF THE UNIQUE, TIMELESS, AND IRREPLACEABLE PHILLIPS COLLECTION.
